About the business

I began researching my own ancestry (a mixture of English, Scottish and Irish) when I was in my early 20s and soon developed a passion for family history. In 2006 I launched my research business, My Ain Folk, to assist others with tracing their ancestors. Since then I have gained many hours of practical research experience in Scottish archives and record repositories and helped clients worldwide to discover their own family story. I have a Postgraduate Diploma in Genealogical Studies from the University of Strathclyde and am a member of the Association of Scottish Genealogists and Researchers in Archives, the Association of Professional Genealogists, The Scottish Genealogy Society and the Society of Genealogists. I specialise in carrying out research at the major Scottish archives, libraries and record repositories in Edinburgh, including the ScotlandsPeople Centre, the National Archives of Scotland and the National Library of Scotland, but am also able to visit many smaller archives and local studies centres throughout Scotland.  My skills in palaeography (reading old handwriting) enable me to carry out research in pre-1700 records and I offer a transcription service for old Scottish and English documents. I am also an experienced heir- and descendant-tracer and have successfully located heirs to estates on behalf of probate research firms in the UK, Europe and the US and enabled private clients to reconnect with long-lost cousins. Please visit my website for further details of my research services or email me to discuss your requirements.
